April 16th-20th

It has been a great week in 5th grade! We are so excited about our trip to Sky Ranch next week. Please see below for the list of items to bring. 

In math, we started research for some real world experiences. The first one is hosting your own party. We have asked the classes to determine the amount of food they would need to purchase if they hosted a party for their friends. We also started a dream vacation project.

In language arts, we introduced our mentor sentence from the book, "The Day the Crayons Came Home." Learners noticed, labeled, revised, and imitated the mentor sentence. Inspired by the book, we began our project writing letters to first grade from the perspective of a crayon. Learners explored and practiced including voice and detail into their writing. 

In science, we are diving deep into our life science unit. We started the week classifying and discussing the characteristics of living and non-living things. Then, we started talking about food chains and food webs. 

In social studies, we deepened our understanding of the Westward Expansion and its importance in the context of US History.

April 2nd-6th

What's Happening at TCE?

STAAR Testing 

-STAAR Math and Reading will be on Tuesday, April 10th and Wednesday April 11th. 

-It is essential that your learner gets plenty of rest, eats a healthy breakfast, and arrives to school on time on these days. 

-Learners will be provided snacks and a water bottle, so they do not need additional snacks. 

-We will not be able to have any visitors in the building this week. This also means no visitors at lunch. 

-During the test, we will need to take up all cell phones and smart watches. Learners will get their cell phones back at the end of the day. Teachers will also not have access to our phones or computers, so please call the office if there is an urgent message. 

-Due to testing, there will be no homework this week. 

There will be no school on Friday, April 13th for learners.

What's Happening in the Classroom?

In math, learners have been continuing to review the concepts from throughout the year by using Quizlet, Kahoots, and many other tools. Ask your learner to show you some of the review games they have been using!

In reading, we continued to review important reading concepts. We also participated in an escape room! Learners may work on iStation assignments over the weekend to help them prepare. 

In social studies, we are starting to wrap up our unit over America's Westward Expansion. 

In science, we continued our investigation of the Earth, moon, and sun by exploring rotations and revolutions. We will continue to learn about the moon causes low and high tides.

What's Happening in the Classroom?
In math, we have been reviewing concepts such as operations with decimals and fractions in preparation for our state assessment. Please check your learner's folders to see some of the review sheets that we have been working on.

In reading, we continued to explore various reading strategies and skills through engaging stations. This week learners focused on understanding definitions and parts of words. They reviewed Latin & Greek roots & affixes, analogies with antonyms & synonyms, idioms, adages, and dictionary skills.

In social studies, we continued working on our Westward Expansion and Manifest Destiny learning ports!

In science, we looked at the difference between climate and weather.  We also started investigating the difference between rotations and revolutions and how they affect seasons, tides, and day and night.

March 19th-23rd

What's Happening in the Classroom?

In math, we have been continuing our measurement unit by practicing converting customary and metric units. Students created input/output tables to help them with the conversions. We also looked at the differences between the customary and metric systems of measurement. We continued to work on finding the area and volume of 2-D and 3-D shapes.

In reading, we began to review our content through engaging reading stations. Learners are working through activities in the areas of vocabulary, poetry, fiction stories, nonfiction stories, and assignments that they need based off their heat map. We will continue to work on these stations as the STAAR test approaches. 

In social studies, we began digital learning ports for our Westward Expansion unit. Learners will be applying their knowledge through activities while learning new information about Manifest Destiny, The Louisiana Purchase, Lewis and Clark, The Oregon Trail, The Gold Rush, and The Trail of Tears. 

In science, we began our Patterns in the Natural World unit. We are starting to explore concepts such as weather and climate, the Earth, Moon, and Sun movements, and seasons.

Cultural Celebration Night

The TCE 1st Annual Cultural Celebration Night is on March 28th. This is something that a committee of parents and teachers have spent time putting together in order to help celebrate the wonderful cultural differences at Town Center. 

Cultural food is one of the events that we will have this evening. This can be anything from mac and cheese and hamburgers to a dish from another country. We encourage you to bring anything that celebrates your family, whether your family's cultural traditions are from America or from somewhere else in the world. Most importantly, the teachers would love to help you facilitate an event. Do you have a favorite game your family plays? Could you teach us a song or a dance? Could you wear a traditional outfit and teach us about the meanings? The Town Center teachers would love to partner with you and help you explain or teach other students and families about your culture. If you are willing to volunteer, we would LOVE to help you plan and partner with you on the night of the event. Please let us know as soon as possible if you are interested in volunteering for this event next week. 

Our goal of this night is to encourage and support the wonderful cultural differences that we have at our school. We would love to celebrate these differences in our Town Center community!

Cultural Celebration Night

CALLING ALL PARENTS!

As we are gearing up for our 1st TCE Family Cultural Celebration Night on Wednesday, March 28th from 5:30-7:00pm, we are wanting our families to bring in traditional foods that they enjoy and would like to share with others.  I am attaching a sign-up sheet where you can add the name of your “family tradition dish”. We are looking for any favorite dish that your family enjoys! Daylight Savings begins Sunday, March 11th. Remember to set your clocks forward.

In reading, we started the week reading a new Junior Great Book. Learners explored the text in more detail through diverse and engaging stations. Some stations allowed learners to create and apply meaning to unfamiliar vocabulary words while also practicing familiar words. Moreover, learners created movie trailers, Chatterpix videos, and creative conversations to apply their knowledge on various reading skills, such as, foreshadow, theme, conflict, and resolution.

In writing, our mentor sentence revisited similes and commas in a series. Learners noticed, labeled, revised, and imitated using our mentor sentence this week from the text, Locomotive by Brian Floca.

In science, we created a Padlet on the vocabulary we will be using in our Alternative Energy Unit.  Please make sure to check out our digital portfolio if you were not able to make it out for Open House to see the Padlet, as well as the amazing learning taking place in science.  When we return from the break, we will continue with alternative energy and then move on to Life Science.

In math, we continued to look at the hierarchy of quadrilaterals and were able to compare the similarities and differences between them. We also used the Pro-Bots to create polygons, and then we measured to find their area and perimeters.

In social studies, we continued our discussion and exploration on the westward expansion and Manifest Destiny. When we return, we will dive deeper into the unit, looking at the Louisiana Purchase, Lewis & Clark, Gold Rush, Trail of Tears, and Oregon Trail.

Open House: Thursday, March 8th 2018

If you are planning on coming to open house, we want to offer you the opportunity to have a flipped experience. We will have a Schoology course set up for parents to access that evening. Even if you are not planning on attending Open House, you can still use the link to have access to your child's account. It will show you some of the work they have been doing in class this year. It is also important to be able to have parent access for 6th grade, as they use Schoology at the middle schools as well.

Curriculum and Instruction

In math this week we started our Geometry Unit. We looked at the hierarchy of quadrilaterals as well as the different types of triangles. The students spent some time sorting and classifying the different shapes based on their attributes.

In science, we finished our unit of study on Earth's Changing Surface. We will begin investigating alternative energy and how it impacts the earth.

In language arts, we started the week reviewing context clues. Learners defined the word foreshadowing using the parts of the word as hints to its meaning. Then, learners watched various clips to foreshadow the endings. Moreover, we explored various similes using our mentor sentence.

In social studies, we started talking about Westward Expansion and the Louisiana Purchase. We explored who Lewis and Clark were and participated in a Google Expedition.
