Welcome to 5th Grade! We had a wonderful first and second week of school! The fifth grade teachers will update our blog each week and send it out to families as part of our communication this year. Please take time to read through the blog each week, as we will include important updates, reminders, upcoming events, pictures, and more!
Student Information Form & Family Photos
We need every family to complete the Student Information form! Thank you so much to those of you that have already completed it. If you haven't yet, please get this completed as soon as you can.

We would also like for your child to create a family photo collage that shows your child's family, pets, hobbies, etc. We talked about this in class and showed them examples. This will be due on Friday, August 25th. Your child will submit it to the Homeroom Hub on Schoology. We greatly appreciate it!
A Note From the Fifth Grade Teachers
This week in Language & Literacy, we started Reading Unit 1: Fiction. During this unit we will focus on writing about what we've read and finding the theme of the story. In writing, we've been working on re-writing the poem by Judith Viorst titled If I Were In Charge of the World. Ask your 5th Grader to share his/her poem with you.
Next week we will start our Writing Unit 1: Personal Narratives.
In Social Studies this week, we started our first unit in which we will learn about the Colonization. The learners are working on a project in which they are analyzing famous artworks that represent the colonies of Jamestown, Plymouth, and Roanoke. Ask your learner what he/she has learned about one of these colonies.
This past week we reinforced our addition and subtraction algorithm operations to prepare to move further into multiplication and division algorithms. Next week, we will camp out in using our multiplication and division algorithms through equations, word problems and multi-step problems.
This past week we dove into Unit 1 called Matter and Energy. We explored what defines matter and how we describe it using physical properties. We also had our first lesson over the Global Goals to be familiar with the 17 goals and what kind of impact a Texas 5th grader can have towards these goals. Next week, we will spend a lesson daily on each of the properties of matter and get some hands-on experience with science tools and exploration.
Curriculum Night
Each year we host Curriculum Night, which is a time for families and parents to come learn about our 5th Grade Curriculum. Special Friends Day
Each year, our school has Special Friends Day in September. On this day, each grade has a one hour time slot in which the learners can invite a Special Friend to visit their classroom. "Special Friends" could include parents, grandparents, older siblings that are out of high school, aunts, uncles, coaches, family friends, etc.
This year, Special Friends Day will be on September 8th.
5th Grade's time slot is from 11:30-12:30.

iPads
TCE 5th graders should come to school each day with their iPad and charger. Please ensure your child charges his/her iPad each evening. Your child should also check periodically to ensure his/her iPad's software is up to date (settings --> general --> software update).
Water Bottles
As you know it is very hot outside. Please help ensure that your child brings a water bottle to school each day. While learners are able to purchase a water bottle from the cafeteria, that is not an every day solution. We have multiple water bottle filling stations on campus, so learners can easily refill their bottles.
Snack
We will have a short snack time each day while we continue to work. 5th graders do not each lunch until 1:00 PM each day, so it's important that they have a healthy and nutritious snack each day to fuel their bodies. We also ask that the snack they bring is completely free of peanuts/tree nuts. This will help provide a safe environment for all learners. Thank you for your help!
Car Tags
Please do your best to keep your car tag visible when/if you come through the carline to pick up your 5th grader. It helps us get the learners into their cars quickly and efficiently. This is especially helpful when it's raining, extremely hot, or extremely cold.
