Friday, February 2nd

Extended Specials occurs every other Tuesday.

5th Grade Extended Specials Days for January:
February 6 & 20

Regular Specials Schedule for All Grades:

We have noticed that more and more of our students have been wearing smart watches and bringing cell phones to school, so we want to take a minute to be clear about expectations for those devices.

Students are not permitted to communicate on their personal devices during the school day. (The same rule applies for their iPads.) This includes parents. Please help us in reinforcing this expectation.  If you need to get in touch with your son/daughter during the day, please email your child's teacher or call the front office.

We have talked about these expectations with the students. We've let them know that if they are using their smart watch, cell phone, or other personal devices to communicate, they will receive one warning. After that one warning, we will ask for those devices to stay at home.

Please pay online through this link or scan the QR code above.

Our Sky Ranch Parent Informational Meeting was yesterday, Thursday 1/18 at 5:30 pm

Your 5th Grader should have come home with a printed letter regarding Valentine's Day. There's a copy of the front of the letter below as well. If you need another copy that has classmates' names, reach out to your homeroom teacher.

If you would like to sign up to be a parent volunteer for a station at the party- please follow the link

Message from PTO:

On Wednesday, February 7th, the teachers, and staff will have their monthly in-service day after school. The PTO likes to provide refreshments for them to enjoy before their meeting. With Super Bowl around the corner, this month’s theme is “We are your #1 fans!” If you are interested in donating drinks, snacks or a door prize, please find a link below for the sign-up genius. If you choose to donate a door prize, please include your child’s name with the prize so we can recognize your family when the winner is called.

Thank you for helping us make the afternoon special for the teachers. Your donation is much appreciated!

Sincerely,

In Reading this week, we continued researching our debatable topics. We are continuing to get practice with annotating nonfiction text and organizing our claims with reasons and evidence. Next week we will finish up our research in anticipation of creating our podcasts.

This week we started to explore the literary essay in Writing. We learned two new strategies for generating ideas about the stories we've read. Next week we will learn how to write literary essays.

In Spelling, we are continuing our study of Greek & Latin roots. Ask your 5th grader to tell you about the roots they've learned so far. They can show you their journals in Google Slides, too. In grammar, we've been working on identifying editing mistakes.

We finished our study of the Diverse Peoples of the West in Social Studies this week. The 5th Graders showed their creativity in advertisements they created to encourage settlers to move West. This week and next week we will be diving into the Causes of the Civil War.

In math this week the students worked on additive and multiplicative patterns within an input/output table with coordinate plane. They had a fun time working on this through our Battleship Keynote and Chess games as a fast finisher options. This unit was short and sweet, so next we are moving onto order of operations.

In science this week the students had their first presentation from our Southwest Pilot. They also worked on some science vocabulary review games, Science MAP, and a Global Goal lesson. Next week we will start our next unit all about Patterns in the Natural World (weather and climate, sun/earth/moon relationships, shadows and seasons).

A Note From the Fifth Grade Teachers

iPads
TCE 5th graders should come to school each day with their iPad and charger. Please ensure your child charges his/her iPad each evening. Your child should also check periodically to ensure his/her iPad's software is up to date (settings --> general --> software update).

Water Bottles
Please help ensure that your child brings a water bottle to school each day. While learners are able to purchase a water bottle from the cafeteria, that is not an every day solution. We have multiple water bottle filling stations on campus, so learners can easily refill their bottles.

Snack
We will have a short snack time each day while we continue to work. 5th graders do not each lunch until 1:00 PM each day, so it's important that they have a healthy and nutritious snack each day to fuel their bodies. We also ask that the snack they bring is completely free of peanuts/tree nuts. This will help provide a safe environment for all learners. Thank you for your help!

Car Tags
Please do your best to keep your car tag visible when/if you come through the carline to pick up your 5th grader. It helps us get the learners into their cars quickly and efficiently. This is especially helpful when it's raining, extremely hot, or extremely cold.
