Math
In math, we will continue after the break with our final unit over measurement. We will explore the many different factors to consider when measuring, including units, strategies, and tools. They will also complete activities finding the area, perimeter, and volume of cubes and rectangular prisms.

Science
In science, we will be starting a new unit: Life Science. The learners will begin to explore the relationship between living and non-living things within an ecosystem. We will learn about how a food web works with the transfer of energy from the sun to producers and then consumers and decomposers.

Language Arts & Reading
During the week before Spring Break, we finished Unit 4 in both reading and writing. When we return, we will be starting Unit 5, which is a review unit! The students will participate in literature discussions, vocabulary review games, and mini lessons that review a variety of skills. During the first week of this unit, we will review fiction and poetry.

Social Studies
When we return from Spring Break, we will wrap up our Westward Expansion unit. The students will learn about the Oregon Trail and the Gold Rush.

As a reminder, all of the activities listed below are optional resources for you and your family.

Math
With our state assessment quickly approaching on April 7th, we would like to begin providing some optional homework opportunities for the learners to practice the format and question set up they will see on the end of the year state assessment. Please click here to access a collection of mini-assessments on a variety of topics. For this upcoming week, we recommend learners work on pages 15-18. You will also find an answer key. Please let us know if you have any questions!

Reading & Language Arts

During the month of February, our students took the 2019 Reading STAAR test as a review. We will use this data to guide our small groups and instruction during our Review Unit in March. If you would like for your son/daughter to work on some practice STAAR tests, we recommend using the 2018 Released STAAR test. Be aware that we have used some other passages from other released tests, so the kids may have already practiced with some of them.

In addition, another way for the students to review for the STAAR test is to review academic vocabulary. There is a folder in each Reading course on Schoology that is called, "What can I review for the STAAR test?" Within this folder, there are some links to vocabulary cards and some review handouts.

Seniors from CHS came to visit our 5th graders this week to help the write letters to their future selves using futureme.org!
