Thanksgiving Basket Deliveries
St. Ann’s Catholic Parish is once again sponsoring Thanksgiving basket deliveries (or a pickup option at St Ann’s Church if you prefer). This program provides families in need with a complete Thanksgiving dinner for the entire family. The baskets will be delivered to your home the weekend before Thanksgiving, so it is important that an adult representing the family be at the home between the hours of Noon and 4PM on Sunday November 19th, 2023. The deadline to sign up for a basket is October 20th, 2023.

Please completely fill out the following form by clicking this link: 2023 St. Ann's Thanksgiving Baskets. You may contact Nurse Crenshaw with any questions at kcrenshaw@coppellisd.com or 214-496-7816.

Curriculum Night Presentation
Thank you so much to those of you that were able to come to Curriculum Night. If you weren't able to come, please take a minute to look through our presentation using this link.

During Curriculum Night, some of our wonderful parents spoke on behalf of PTO. One of the things they mentioned is the importance of visiting the PTO website: https://www.towncenterpto.org/. They also shared about the TCE Dad's Club which is looking for more members.

IMPORTANT DATES
Friday Oct. 6th- Fall Conferences
Friday Oct. 6th & Monday Oct. 9th- NO SCHOOL
December 5th - 5th Grade Music Program 6:00-6:30

A Note From the Fifth Grade Teachers

iPads
TCE 5th graders should come to school each day with their iPad and charger. Please ensure your child charges his/her iPad each evening. Your child should also check periodically to ensure his/her iPad's software is up to date (settings --> general --> software update).

Water Bottles
As you know it is very hot outside. Please help ensure that your child brings a water bottle to school each day. While learners are able to purchase a water bottle from the cafeteria, that is not an every day solution. We have multiple water bottle filling stations on campus, so learners can easily refill their bottles.

Snack
We will have a short snack time each day while we continue to work. 5th graders do not each lunch until 1:00 PM each day, so it's important that they have a healthy and nutritious snack each day to fuel their bodies. We also ask that the snack they bring is completely free of peanuts/tree nuts. This will help provide a safe environment for all learners. Thank you for your help!

Car Tags
Please do your best to keep your car tag visible when/if you come through the carline to pick up your 5th grader. It helps us get the learners into their cars quickly and efficiently. This is especially helpful when it's raining, extremely hot, or extremely cold.

Reminder: Start With Hello Week

We are excited to launch Start with Hello Week at Town Center next week, September 18-22!
Program Overview
The Start With Hello program empowers students in grades K-12 to recognize loneliness and social isolation in their peers, offering effective strategies to reach out and help, and ways they can grow an empathetic and inclusive community.  The program is designed around three goals that are accomplished using the program’s framework and reinforced throughout the program cycle.
Goals
The three goals of the Start With Hello program are to teach students how to:
• Recognize loneliness and social isolation in peers.
• Help their peers who may be lonely and/or socially isolated.
• Grow an empathetic and inclusive community.
Program Framework
The goals are accomplished using our three-step program framework:
1. See Someone Alone: learn how to recognize social isolation and loneliness.
2. Reach Out and Help: learn the benefits of helping peers who are lonely or socially isolated as well as strategies to overcome the challenges.
3. Start with Hello: learn ways to help peers who are lonely and socially isolated as well as help create a more connected and inclusive community.
Check out the graphic below to learn more about how we will reinforce these skills at TCE this year!  ðŸ’š

This week in reading, we focused on point of view and character traits. We also focused on noticing important details as we read.

In writing, we continued our Personal Narrative unit. Learners are practicing generating story ideas by brainstorming people they love, places that matter to them, and memories they have associated with strong emotions.

We also continued our spelling study with our third list, which is a list of easily confused words such as knew/new, clothes/close, accept/except, and their/there. Ask your 5th grader about the differences between these words.

This week we wrapped up our first unit and the kids got to show what they know about whole number operations. Next week, we will begin our second unit of decimal place value. We will start with being able to identify the place value of multi-digit numbers that include multiple decimal places, and then order, compare and represent these numbers.

This week we learned about mixtures and solutions and took the Science MAP test. Next week, we will be wrapping up unit one with final lessons on conductivity through heat transfer. Then the classes will work on some final review activities and then the kids can show what they know on a post test.

IMPORTANT DATES
September 11-15: TCE Book Fair Open
September 18-22: Start With Hello Week
September 20: Learners are invited to wear green.
September 22: Sonic Night
