Week of October 7-11

We had another great week in 5th grade!

Please see updates below:

October 7th: Stomp Out Bullying Day
October 10th: Last Day of the 9 Weeks & Spirit Rally
October 11th: Parent Conferences
October 16th: Picture Retake Day

Parent Conferences
Please sign up for a Parent Conference if you haven't already. You can find the link that was e-mailed to you from your learner's teacher. (Please e-mail them again if you can't find it!)

KTEX Spotlight
The 5th graders in the KTEX Productions & KTEX Editing Club produce our Daily Announcements show called KTEX. On Fridays, we put on a longer show with extra segments such as Jokes, Weather, Sports, Teacher Interviews, and a Global Goals Update. The learners write the script and run all of the equipment! We thought you might enjoy seeing the Friday Show each week. Click here to see the Friday Show from Friday, October 4th.

The learners are invited to participate in World Day of Bullying Prevention by wearing blue on Monday, October 7th.

TCE Pumpkin Patch

Your learner came home with a letter that explains Sky Ranch Payment for the year. You can view the letter here. Our Sky Ranch trip will be April 22-April 24. The first payment will be due October 4th and it will be $50. If you would like to pay online, you may visit this link. Please contact your homeroom teacher or Mrs. Ford, the assistant principal, if you would like to discuss payment plans.

In math next week, we will continue our decimal opersations unit by exploring dividing a whole number by a decimal. We will participate in learning experiences and ports based on our pre-test heat map data to practice the skills we are missing. Click here for some optional decimal at-home practice.

In science next week we will be taking our post-assessment on our Matter and Energy unit. Click here to view a review presentation that learners can utilize to prepare for their assessment. We will be starting our next unit which is Force, Motion, and Energy.

In reading, we will spend our last week of the fiction unit focusing on the theme, or life lesson, in our Book Club books. We will complete our Unit 1 post assessment which focuses on the following skills:

  • Analyzing Parts of a Story in Relation to the Whole
  • Analyzing Author’s Craft
  • Determining Themes/Cohesion
  • Comparing and Contrasting Story Elements and Themes
We'd love for you to talk to your son/daughter about the characters in their books. What motivates the characters and what kinds of  lessons are the characters learning?

We will write our last narrative drafts of this unit this week. We will apply similar author's craft ideas in our own writing as we continue to write about what our stories are really about. If you haven't yet, talk to your son/daughter about his/her narrative story. Ask them to tell you all about the story they've been writing about and the bigger meaning or feeling behind the story!

We have started our study of the causes of  the  American Revolution, and the kids are already really interested! We will continue to explore the reasons why America and Great Britain went to war. If you'd like, you could talk to your son/daughter about the conflict between the colonists and Great Britain that led to the American Revolution.
