Safety Patrol
Earlier this week, students heard a brief presentation about Safety Patrol. Any student that would like to participate in Safety Patrol must complete the permission slip (including a parent signature) and return it to Mrs. Hruby by Wednesday, September 6th.

First LEGO League Robotics Club
4th and 5th graders are invited to apply for the TCE LEGO Robotics club. We will be able to take 15-20 learners. Some learners already took an application, but here is the link to the information and application form. You can contact Ms. Burks at kburks@coppellisd.com if you have any questions. These applications are due Tuesday, September 5th.

Start With Hello Week

We are excited to launch Start with Hello Week at Town Center during September 18-22!
Program Overview
The Start With Hello program empowers students in grades K-12 to recognize loneliness and social isolation in their peers, offering effective strategies to reach out and help, and ways they can grow an empathetic and inclusive community.  The program is designed around three goals that are accomplished using the program’s framework and reinforced throughout the program cycle.
Goals
The three goals of the Start With Hello program are to teach students how to:
• Recognize loneliness and social isolation in peers.
• Help their peers who may be lonely and/or socially isolated.
• Grow an empathetic and inclusive community.
Program Framework
The goals are accomplished using our three-step program framework:
1. See Someone Alone: learn how to recognize social isolation and loneliness.
2. Reach Out and Help: learn the benefits of helping peers who are lonely or socially isolated as well as strategies to overcome the challenges.
3. Start with Hello: learn ways to help peers who are lonely and socially isolated as well as help create a more connected and inclusive community.
Check out the graphic below to learn more about how we will reinforce these skills at TCE this year!  ๐Ÿ’š

This week in Language & Literacy, we learned analyzed characters and reviewed plot. We also focused on writing about our books and what we're thinking while we read.

We also began assessing learners on their Oral Reading Fluency. Once those assessments complete, they will be shared with parents.

In writing, we started our Personal Narrative unit. Learners practiced generating story ideas by brainstorming memories with people that matter to them and places that they love.

We also started our spelling study with our first list: words we commonly use and should spell correctly with endings.

In Social Studies this week, we learned about the early 13 colonies. Learners compared the different regions of the 13 colonies.

We continued working on multiplication operations as the week began and then we finished the week working on division operations. As we move into next week we will continue working on division and then move onto using all operations in multi-step problems. We also took our first Math MAP test of the year on Wednesday. Once all Fall MAP tests are completed, data will be shared with families.

We learned about our properties of matter specifically changing states of matter, mass, and volume through the use of triple beam balances and a displacement lab on Friday. Next week we will be moving onto density.

Curriculum Night
Each year we host Curriculum Night, which is a time for families and parents to come learn about our 5th Grade Curriculum. This year, our Curriculum Night session will be Thursday, September 7th from 5:45-6:30. We will have more information soon about where each session will be housed. We hope you can make it!

*Kinder, 1st, & 2nd Curriculum Night will be 5:00-5:45
3rd, 4th, & 5th Curriculum Night will be 5:45-6:30*

Special Friends Day

Each year, our school has Special Friends Day in September. On this day, each grade has a one hour time slot in which the learners can invite a Special Friend to visit their classroom. "Special Friends" could include parents, grandparents, older siblings that are out of high school, aunts, uncles, coaches, family friends, etc.

This year, Special Friends Day will be on September 8th.
5th Grade's time slot is from 11:30-12:30.

In order to speed up the process of signing in, you can use this link (QR code in image above) to have a name tag already printed when you arrive.

A Note From the Fifth Grade Teachers

iPads
TCE 5th graders should come to school each day with their iPad and charger. Please ensure your child charges his/her iPad each evening. Your child should also check periodically to ensure his/her iPad's software is up to date (settings --> general --> software update).

Water Bottles
As you know it is very hot outside. Please help ensure that your child brings a water bottle to school each day. While learners are able to purchase a water bottle from the cafeteria, that is not an every day solution. We have multiple water bottle filling stations on campus, so learners can easily refill their bottles.

Snack
We will have a short snack time each day while we continue to work. 5th graders do not each lunch until 1:00 PM each day, so it's important that they have a healthy and nutritious snack each day to fuel their bodies. We also ask that the snack they bring is completely free of peanuts/tree nuts. This will help provide a safe environment for all learners. Thank you for your help!

Car Tags
Please do your best to keep your car tag visible when/if you come through the carline to pick up your 5th grader. It helps us get the learners into their cars quickly and efficiently. This is especially helpful when it's raining, extremely hot, or extremely cold.
